Marriage Duty Tax return
Marriage Duty Tax return
This is a transcription (by Jeremy Hutson) of the return for the Marriage Duty Tax for 1696, D/Sa/E 962, which appears to be a complete list of the population of Tudhoe at the time, listed household by household.
There are no entries in the Marriage Duty Tax return in the columns for widdowers, burials, birth and marriages. These colums have been used here for the window counts listed as “Old ass” and “Sur” in the 1697 Window Tax assessors accounts, and any relationship to households listed in the 1705 Recusant Roll.

It is remarkable that nearly everyone listed as a papist in 1705 is given as “yeoman”, even those listed as “labourer” in the 1696 Marriage Duty Tax return.
The only householder who paid window tax in 1697 but was not listed for the Marriage Duty Tax in 1696 was John Smith (old ass 7, sur 8). He is listed as a papist in 1705, with his wife and 2 servants.
Others in the 1705 list of papists who are in neither the Marriage Duty Tax return nor the Window Tax returns are:
Thomas Thornberry, weaver
Thomas Johnson, yeoman
Peter Crags, yeoman, with wife and 2 servants
Widow Norman
Thomas Grinwell, yeoman, with wife and 3 children
Margaret Gramshaw, spinster.
